Princess Tenagnework Haile Selassie

Tenagnework Haile Selassie was born on 12 January 1912 in Harar, in the eastern Ethiopian highlands, the eldest daughter of Ras Tafari Makonnen — the future Emperor Haile Selassie I — and Woizero Menen Asfaw. Baptised Fikirte Mariam, she grew up as the senior child of a house that would come to define twentieth-century Ethiopia. When her father was crowned emperor in November 1930, she received the imperial title of princess, and for the rest of her long life she stood near the centre of the Solomonic court.

Her life bent with the fortunes of her nation. Married first to Ras Desta Damtew, she bore two sons and four daughters, among them Princesses Aida, Seble, Sophia and Hirut Desta. When Fascist Italy invaded in 1935, she followed the imperial family into exile at Fairfield House in Bath, England, returning in 1941 when British-supported forces restored her father to the throne. In September 1944 she married Ras Andargachew Messai.

Her honour lay not in a single named school but in a lifetime of stewardship. She founded the Sebeta School and Center for the Blind, and from 1941 until 1974 served as President of the Ethiopian Women's Charitable Works Association, succeeding her sister Princess Tsehai and advancing the education, health and welfare of Ethiopian women. After Empress Menen's death in 1961 she became the foremost woman of the imperial court.

When the Derg deposed her father in 1974, she was arrested and held for years — listed as "Prisoner Number One" in all Ethiopia — before her release in 1989 and eventual return home. She died in Addis Ababa on 6 April 2003. May the eldest daughter of the last Solomonic line be remembered with the dignity she carried through exile, prison, and homecoming alike.
