Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana

Charwe Nyakasikana was born around 1840 in the Mazoe (Mazowe) region of Mashonaland, in what is now north-central Zimbabwe. She belonged to the Zezuru branch of the Shona people, whose spiritual life was ordered by the mhondoro — the great ancestral lion-spirits believed to speak through chosen human mediums.

In the 1880s she was recognized as the svikiro, the living medium, of the female mhondoro Nehanda. When the spirit possessed her, she was believed to speak with Nehanda's own voice and authority. From her home in the hills around Mazoe she became a religious center for central and northern Mashonaland, consulted on rain, planting, and the installation of chiefs.

When the British South Africa Company seized land, cattle, and labor after 1890, Charwe emerged as one of the spiritual leaders of the First Chimurenga of 1896–97. Working alongside the medium Sekuru Kaguvi, she helped organize widespread Shona resistance and was linked to the death of Native Commissioner Henry Hawkins Pollard. She was captured in late 1897, tried at Salisbury, and on 27 April 1898 hanged at about the age of fifty-eight.

To the end she refused the colonizers' faith and, by tradition, foretold that her bones would rise again to complete the struggle for her people's freedom. Generations later, the fighters of Zimbabwe's liberation took up her name as a banner. Honored grandmother of a nation — Mbuya Nehanda, whose voice outlived the gallows.
