Negus Tekle Haymanot of Gojjam

Born Adal Tesema around 1847 in Jabi Tehnan, in the highlands of Gojjam in north-western Ethiopia, he was the son of Tesema Goshu, a governor of Gojjam, and grandson of Ras Goshu Zewde — a family long rooted in the leadership of the province. He came of age amid the shifting alliances of nineteenth-century Ethiopia, when regional lords contended for authority beneath a contested imperial crown.

His rise was sealed by both arms and kinship. He consolidated Gojjam under his own hand, and his standing was strengthened by his marriage to Laqetch Gebre Mehdin, a kinswoman of Emperor Tekle Giyorgis II — a union that bound him to the imperial house not by blood but by alliance. On 20 January 1881, at Debre Tabor, Emperor Yohannes IV appointed him Negus, King of Gojjam, and granted him authority reaching toward Kaffa.

As Negus he became one of the foremost lieutenants of his age. His ambitions southward met the rising power of Menelik of Shewa, and at the Battle of Embabo in June 1882 his forces were defeated and he was taken captive. Yet he endured, and in the great national hour at Adwa in 1896 he marched with Menelik II against the invading Italians, commanding thousands of riflemen, spearmen, and cavalry in the defence of Ethiopian sovereignty.

He reigned until his death on 10 January 1901, having served three emperors across two turbulent decades. Negus Tekle Haymanot of Gojjam is honored as a founder of the modern Gojjami kingship and a steadfast defender of his people's freedom.
