Murtala Mohammed
1938 — 1976 · Nigerian head of state; the most internationally consequential Nigerian statesman of the 1970s; assassinated in office at thirty-seven
Murtala Ramat Mohammed was born on the eighth of November 1938 in the Kurawa quarters of Kano, in what was then Northern Nigeria, into a respected family bound to the life of the old emirate. Raised in a devout household, he entered the Nigerian Army after his schooling and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1961, having trained at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in England. As a young officer he served with the Nigerian contingent of the United Nations peacekeeping force during the Congo Crisis of the early 1960s.
He rose swiftly through the ranks, taking a prominent part in the counter-coup of July 1966 and serving through the Nigerian Civil War. By October 1971 he had been promoted brigadier, one of the youngest generals in the country. When a bloodless coup removed General Gowon on the twenty-ninth of July 1975, Murtala Mohammed was named Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
His months in office were brief but consequential. He moved with urgency against inefficiency and corruption, reformed the civil service, reorganised the armed forces, set in motion the return to civilian rule, expanded the federation toward nineteen states, and launched the historic decision to build a new federal capital at Abuja. Abroad, his firm, principled foreign policy — above all on African liberation — gave Nigeria a voice of unusual weight.
On the thirteenth of February 1976, his car was ambushed in Lagos traffic during an abortive coup led by Lt. Col. Bukar Suka Dimka, and he was killed at the age of thirty-seven. His face endures on the twenty-naira note and on the great airport that bears his name. May the memory of a leader who spent his brief authority in the service of his nation be honored.
