Lavinia Williams

Lavinia Williams was born on the second of July 1916 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, into an African American family of West Indian descent. Raised across Portsmouth, Virginia, and Brooklyn, New York, she came of age in a country that offered Black dancers few open doors, and she trained at the Art Students League of New York, where she joined the pioneering American Negro Ballet.

Her artistry ripened alongside Katherine Dunham, in whose company she danced from 1940 to 1945, appearing in the Broadway production Cabin in the Sky and the film Stormy Weather. Under Dunham she mastered the Caribbean and folk vocabularies that would define her life's work, learning to hold classical ballet, modern dance, and the ancestral movement of the diaspora within a single disciplined body.

In 1953 Williams relocated to Haiti, where she built the country's national school of dance, trained the National Folklore Group, and in 1954 founded the Haitian Institute of Folklore and Classic Dance. Over the decades that followed she carried this labor onward, establishing the principal post-war ballet-and-modern-dance training programmes at Georgetown, Guyana, and in the Bahamas, planting institutions where none had stood.

She died on the nineteenth of July 1989 in Port-au-Prince, the city she had made her home, having given nations their own dancers and given the diaspora a place to see itself move. May her name endure as a foundation others still stand upon.
