Kwasi Wiredu

Kwasi Wiredu was born on the third of October 1931 in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of the then British Gold Coast, into the Akan world whose language and thought would become the wellspring of his life's philosophy. He came of age in a colonial society, encountering philosophy as a schoolboy in Kumasi through the works of thinkers such as Plato and Bertrand Russell, and carrying that early spark into a distinguished course of study.

He read for his honours degree at the University of Ghana, Legon, graduating in 1958, and then proceeded to University College, Oxford, where under teachers including Gilbert Ryle he took the B.Phil. in 1960. Trained rigorously in the analytic tradition, he returned to Ghana in 1961, rising swiftly to a professorship and the headship of the philosophy department at Legon, where he taught for more than two decades before joining the University of South Florida, where he served for the remainder of his career.

Wiredu became widely regarded as one of Africa's foremost philosophers. His landmark books — Philosophy and an African Culture of 1980 and Cultural Universals and Particulars of 1996 — advanced his signature project of conceptual decolonization: the disciplined examination of inherited colonial categories against the resources of indigenous, and especially Akan, thought and language. He drew on Akan concepts of person, community, truth, and mind to argue that philosophy could be pursued in African terms without abandoning universal rigor.

He died on the sixth of January 2022 at the age of ninety. A pioneer who taught a continent to reason in its own tongue, Kwasi Wiredu is honored as a builder of African philosophy and a keeper of the dignity of Akan thought.
