Idrissa Ouédraogo

Idrissa Ouédraogo was born on 21 January 1954 in Banfora, in the south-west of what was then Upper Volta, and grew to manhood in the northern town of Ouahigouya, whose Mooré cadences would later shape the voice of his cinema. Sent by his farming family to Ouagadougou for his education, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1976 and completed his studies at the African Institute for Cinema Studies in 1981.

His training carried him far beyond the Sahel — to Kiev and then to the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris, from which he graduated in 1985. Yet his eye remained fixed on the villages of home. In the compression of daily rural life he found a stage large enough for the oldest human questions of love, honour, exile, and forgiveness.

With Yaaba (1989), which took the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes, and Tilaï (1990), which won the Grand Prix at Cannes, he became the foremost village-realism auteur of Africa's second cinematic generation. Samba Traoré (1993) earned him a Silver Bear nomination at Berlin. Alongside Gaston Kaboré he shaped the celebrated Burkinabé school, blurring the historical and the mythic in a spare, luminous humanism.

He died in Ouagadougou on 18 February 2018, aged sixty-four. Idrissa Ouédraogo lifted the dust of ordinary villages into the light of the world's great screens, and there it still shines. May his name be honoured.
