Military leader who unified much of the Majapahit archipelago.
Gajah Mada was the great mahapatih — prime minister and military commander — of the Majapahit empire of Java, in the fourteenth century. From about 1331 he was the driving force of the most powerful state Southeast Asia had known.
He is remembered above all for the Palapa oath: his vow, on taking office, to taste no luxury until he had united the whole archipelago — the Nusantara — under Majapahit. Through decades of campaigns he brought under its influence lands across what are now Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and beyond.
His reign spread Javanese culture and Hindu tradition across the islands, but was not without tragedy: the Bubat affair of 1357, in which a marriage alliance with the Sunda kingdom collapsed into slaughter, is remembered as a dark chapter of his ambition.
He died about 1364. For modern Indonesia his name became a symbol of national unity, his Palapa oath echoed in the naming of the nation’s satellites. Honored among the Great Ones of every civilization; kept here so the memory is never lost.
