Édouard Glissant

Édouard Glissant was born on the twenty-first of September 1928 in Bezaudin, a hamlet of the commune of Sainte-Marie, on the northeastern coast of Martinique. He was the son of a plantation manager, and grew up amid the cane country whose history of slavery and displacement would shape his life's thought. Awarded a scholarship, he went in 1938 to the Lycée Schoelcher in Fort-de-France, the island's forge for its future minds.

At that lycée the poet and statesman Aimé Césaire — architect of Négritude — was present as a teacher during Glissant's years there, and though he did not instruct Glissant directly, he stood as a lasting inspiration whom the younger man would both honor and, in time, challenge. In 1946 Glissant sailed for Paris, where he studied philosophy and ethnology at the Sorbonne and the Musée de l'Homme, entering the currents of anticolonial thought then stirring the capital.

From this soil grew a body of work that ranged across poetry, the novel, and philosophy. His novel La Lézarde won the Prix Renaudot in 1958, and across essays such as Le Discours antillais he forged the idea of antillanité, or Caribbeanness, an identity rooted in the Caribbean's own layered history rather than in any single ancestral homeland.

His crowning gift was the Poétique de la Relation — a philosophy of Relation that held all cultures to be endlessly intertwined, and defended the right to opacity, the dignity of remaining unknowable before those who demand transparency. Édouard Glissant died in Paris on the third of February 2011. May the archipelago of his thought carry his name across every shore it taught the world to see as kin.
