Djibril Diop Mambéty

Djibril Diop Mambéty was born on 23 January 1945 in Colobane, a town on the outskirts of Dakar in what was then French West Africa. He came from the Lebou people, the coastal community long settled around the Cap-Vert peninsula, and was the son of a Muslim cleric. Though he would become one of Africa's most singular film artists, he had no formal training in cinema; his craft was forged first in the theatre.

Trained as an actor at the Daniel Sorano National Theatre in Dakar, Mambéty turned to the camera in his early twenties. His short films Contras'City (1968) and Badou Boy (1970) cast a sardonic, poetic eye on the contradictions of the capital, announcing the themes of hybridity and displacement that would run through all his work.

In 1973 he released Touki Bouki, a technically daring and richly symbolic feature that followed two young lovers dreaming of escape from Dakar to a mythic France. The film won the International Critics' Award at Cannes and the Special Jury Award at Moscow, earning him lasting international acclaim. Nearly two decades passed before his second feature, Hyènes (1992), an African reimagining of Dürrenmatt's The Visit set in his native Colobane. He continued with Le Franc (1994) and the posthumously completed La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil (1999), fragments of an unfinished trilogy of the small and the overlooked.

Djibril Diop Mambéty died on 23 July 1998 in Paris, aged fifty-three. He left only a handful of films, yet each remains a landmark, and his vision endures as one of the founding lights of African cinema. May his name be spoken with honor.
