Agostinho Neto

António Agostinho Neto was born on the seventeenth of September 1922 at Caxicane, in the Ícolo e Bengo district near Catete, in Portuguese Angola. He was raised in a Methodist household — his father a pastor and teacher — and his early schooling in Luanda opened a path few Angolans of his time were permitted to walk. After working in the colonial health service, he won a scholarship and travelled to Portugal, where he pursued medical studies at the University of Coimbra and the University of Lisbon, completing his degree in 1958.

Even as a student, Neto lived a double calling. He became a physician who tended his people and a poet whose verse gave voice to a colonized nation. His first poems appeared in 1948, and his celebrated collection Sagrada Esperança (Sacred Hope) gathered work written across years of struggle and imprisonment. His words carried the ache and defiance of Angola itself, and he came to be regarded as his country's preeminent poet.

Neto's medicine and poetry led inevitably to politics. He rose to lead the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), enduring repeated arrest by Portuguese authorities, whose crackdown on his supporters brought bloodshed to his home district. Through the long liberation war, he steered the movement until, on the eleventh of November 1975, he proclaimed Angola's independence and became the nation's first President.

He governed until his death in Moscow on the tenth of September 1979, where he had gone for treatment of cancer. His birthday is honored in Angola as National Heroes' Day. May he be remembered as the healer, the poet, and the father of a free Angola — a man who gave his nation both its independence and its enduring song.
